This new project aims to create an exhibition of contemporary art in August 2008, in front gardens located in Portobello, in the area between the High Street/Joppa Road, Kings Road and Portobello Promenade. The exhibition will be presented as part of the annual Edinburgh Art Festival and will be concurrent with the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe and other cultural events which attract substantial numbers of tourists to the City.

The strategic objectives of the Garden Gallery project are:

  • To provide the general public with an opportunity to experience high quality work by contemporary artists
  • To increase awareness of the contribution Big Things on the Beach is making to the cultural life of Edinburgh
  • To build local involvement in the activities of Big Things on the Beach
  • To build relationships with artists for possible future commissions
The Garden Gallery project will be treated as a pilot and any decision to repeat or
build on the project will be based on a full evaluation of this year’s activity.

Hosts

Artworks will be "hosted" by local people who have gardens that are readily visible from the streets or Promenade. In July 2007, around 50 households offered their gardens for this purpose. Householders will make their own decisions as to whether to invite the public into their gardens or whether the works should be viewed from the street or promenade. This and any other issues relating to individual households will be factored in to decisions about the placing of specific works. Householders will not be paid for their participation in the project but will be acknowledged in the exhibition guide.

Artists

We aim to attract exhibits from emerging and established artists, with some well known names to attract interest. Open invitations to artists will be published through artists networks in March 2008 and a selection process will be led by the Curator in May/June. We are open to artwork in any medium and we are interested in innovative ideas of how to make the most imaginative use of the unconventional gallery space we are creating. Artists will be invited to loan works of art that are suitable for open air display over a period of time. Artists will be responsible for the installation and removal of their work.
