Call for Artists - Garden Gallery

As part of our summer of activities the Garden Gallery is now open.

Currently in its second year, GG’09 is an interactive art space that takes place during the Edinburgh Art Festival, the International Festival and the Fringe 2009.

For those that don’t know about the project the exhibition format is non-gallery based. Local residents play an active role as ‘hosts’ and the participation between artist and hosts is a key element of the project.

This year artists will be asked to work with a group of the hosts to produce a artwork - artists are encouraged to think out of the garden into the community. The project will examine how artists can contribute to communities both public and private through contemporary art.

Selected artists will have an interest or history of engaging with host communities to create stimulating, though provoking artworks that can be produced in a variety of medium.

Currently three commissions are available with a project fund of £1000.00 for each work. A presentation of artwork to hosts and the wider community will take place on 27 August with work in progress being displayed in Portobello from the 22 August to 5 September.

Artists should have a dynamic approach to engaging the local audience.

To register interest, please send six images (jpgs) of current work and a short artists statement by email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Applications deadline: 22 June 2009
Project fund: £1000
Project Start: 1 July 2009

Imagine Porty Prom

The Scottish Arts Council and Edinburgh City Council have agreed to fund Big Things on the Beach to involve the public in creating a Public Art Plan for Portobello Promenade. We call the project Imagine Porty Prom. Further information about the project can be read here.

To get the project under way we are looking for two key people; a full time Participation Worker to create opportunities for public involvement and a Public Art Consultant to ensure that we are outward looking, meet the highest standards and produce a professional and 'do-able' Plan. Follow the links to find out more about these positions and pass on the information to any of your contacts who might be able to offer the skills and experience we need.

In July we will launch an ambitious programme of activity, including a number of temporary arts commissions, to enable local people and visitors to Portobello to share their imaginings about the Promenade of the future, what we would like to experience when we are there and how we would like to feel about it. The Public Art Plan we create will be incorporated into the development of the City Council's Waterfront Promenade project to develop the full 17 miles of Edinburgh's shoreline (read more about this in The Scotsman).

From July, Big Things on the Beach will have its own home when we take over the premises last occupied by the Tides Inn pub at the bottom of Kings Road. This will be the base for the Garden Gallery and the Imagine Porty Prom projects and a launch pad for the future development of Big Things. We look forward to inviting you to our 'lift off' party later in the year.

Garden Gallery 2009

After last year’s successful Garden Gallery we are pleased to announce that we will be running another project over the summer this year.

Unfortunately we were not as successful in gaining the same level of funding as last year however, this has led us to create a new format for this year’s Garden Gallery that will still involve over 30 hosts and some interesting artists.

This new project will involve three artists, selected by the curators. Each artist will work with a group of hosts to produce a final artwork.

Although the outcome from this process may not be something displayed in a garden, each host will be working directly with an artist to form part of a larger work that will be completed and shown to the wider community.

The artists brief will be to examine how artists can contribute to communities through contemporary art projects and again our aim is to stimulate, excite and provoke discussion within the community. Work in progress will be displayed in Portobello from 22 August - 5 September, with a presentation of the artwork by the artist on 27 August.

We are currently sending out a call for artists and aim to have made our selection by the end of June.

We hope this project will be a fun and exciting opportunity to build on last year’s Garden Gallery. For more information please feel free to email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
