Imagine Porty Prom Project Summary

Placemaking Workshop

E-mail Print

On 4th March a group of Portobello residents, design professionals, artists and officers from City of Edinburgh Council came together at the invitation of Big Things on the Beach to ‘Imagine Porty Prom.’

Groups were asked to focus on a number of ideas based on the concepts outlined in the City’s plans, and the artist commissioning activity of Big Things on the Beach, as well as exploring the site.

-       What should Porty Prom look and feel like in ten or twenty years time?

-       How can the qualities of Porty Prom be celebrated and reflected in its development?

-       How can the work of artists be integrated into all aspects of the promenade’s development?

The results of the workshop are contributing to the Portobello Public Art Plan which is currently being authored by RKL consultants. Download the Workshop Report here.

Imagine Porty Prom Project

Imagine Porty Prom is a year-long project that aims to involve the local community in the creation of a long-term Public Art Plan for the one mile stretch of Portobello Prom. It is our response to the City of Edinburgh Council’s proposal to create an Edinburgh Promenade along the 17km shoreline of the City. We want the Portobello section of the Edinburgh Promenade to reflect the dynamism and creativity of the local community.

Imagine Porty Prom is the next stage in realising our long-term vision to develop Portobello Promenade into a site for the creation and presentation of contemporary public art. Above all, we aim to involve the Portobello community and the many visitors to Portobello Promenade in contributing to and commenting on emerging ideas. The year’s programme includes:

  • Three temporary art commissions launching 27th March, 1st May & 31st July.
  • Events and workshops including an Imagine Porty Prom event late August.
  • The publication of a Portobello Promenade Public Art Plan launching in August.
  • The project base until early September 2010, the Portobello Public Art House, situated at the foot of Kings Road, Portobello and open Thursdays, Fridays 10 - 6 and Saturdays, Sundays 1 – 6.

The volunteer members of Big Things on the Beach are assisted in achieving this by Public Art Participation Worker, Susan Grant, by the creativity of the artists we commission and by the technical expertise of public art consultants RKL.

We are grateful to the Scottish Arts Council Lottery Fund, to the City of Edinburgh Council’s Economic Development Department, the Department of Culture, Leisure and Sport and the Craigmillar and Portobello Neighbourhood Partnership, not only for their funding support but also for their commitment to supporting this community to realise its vision.

Big Things on the Beach is a public art trust in Portobello, a seaside suburb close to the city centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. It was formed by a group of residents in 2003 to explore the potential of the seafront as a site for engagement with public artworks by both emerging and established artists.

Since 2004 we have commissioned artists to create substantial temporary artworks, trained ourselves and others in the process of commissioning public artworks through international site visits and guest lectures and successfully raised funding to these ends.

We are currently funded by the Scottish Arts Council and The City of Edinburgh Council
