Public Art Course - Course 2, term 2 Print E-mail

Read more...Term two began on a cold and dark Wednesday evening in January. The group met to hear from Gordon Brennan, a local artist and lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA). The session was aptly titled ‘Putting Art Back into Public Art’ and looked at a variety of different artworks. Gordon helped the group to understand that art, regardless of its’ setting, has to be good art. And art is ‘rated’ by the viewer or audience based solely on their personal understanding of the work itself.

Will Porty be "Inspired"? Print E-mail

Big Things on the Beach has made a proposal to the Scottish Arts Council for a share of its £8M Inspire Fund which is intended to encourage more people to become involved in the arts.

Our proposal, "Resort", is for a year long programme of activity in 2009-10 to enable artists and local people to explore what the idea of resort means in the 21st century and the role of art in making it a reality.

Resort will provide opportunities for people to become involved in a major, artist lead, challenge project; for artists to change the ways in which we perceive Portobello and for the creation of a major artwork by the artist Richard Wilson whose work "Turning the Place Over" is a highlight of Liverpool’s European City of Culture 2008 celebrations (see the report from this years commissioning group). Local people will play a central role in commissioning artists for the project and young people will be fully involved in making the year a vibrant and exciting experience.

We will know in July if Big Things on the Beach will get an opportunity to enter a full scale bid for the Inspire Fund's millions.

2007/8 Public Art Course: A Participants Experience Print E-mail

Read more...Firstly, a bit of background about me. I have lived in Portobello for almost nine years and work as a Human Resources Administrator. My interests are music, theatre, old movies, travel, walking in our amazing countryside and although not being a creative person, I appreciate art in its many different forms.

My husband is the creative half of our partnership and is a keen photographer. We both went to see the launch of "WONDER" in midsummer, the temporary artwork by Hill Jephson Robb, which was commissioned by the Big Things on the Beach (BTOTB) Public Art Course participants of 2006/07. We both loved it.

Click below to read on for more of Irene Morrice's course report. This report is part of the 2007-08 Public Art commissioning course.
