Update on Wonder Print E-mail
The middle pyramid of Wonder has recently been removed. A large proportion of the pyramid's sand bags had been moved, exposing the scaffold sub-structure. The other pyramids (or what's left of them!) are still in place and are continuing their process of returning into the beach they were built out of! There are no plans to rebuild the two remaining pyramids.

Read more... Big Things on the Beach’s second public art project was unveiled on Portobello Beach on Sunday, July 31st. The work remained in place until the end of October.

Artists Euan Harvey and Malcolm Hosie have created a major artistic installation based upon the industries which have contributed to the growth of Portobello over the past century. Five giant banners were erected along the beach using designs derived from various graphic languages. Reaching to a height of eight and a half metres these dramatic and colourful banners will be visible from many parts of the coastline from Musselburgh to Leith.

Although each element can be viewed independently the visual impact and placement of the banners creates a dialogue and interdependency reflecting the harmonious notion of a community.

The first project in 2004 was undertaken in partnership with the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, and Renny Nisbet, an artist who grew up in Portobello was selected as the Artist in Residence.

Renny worked to create a Tidal Artwork, which was launched to coincide with a Blue Moon on July 31st 2004. - A Blue Moon is the name given to the second full moon in a calendar month, which results from the fact that full moons are separated by only 29 days, but most months are 30 or 31 days long, so a second full moon can occur 'once in a blue moon'!

Thanks for the great support on the opening of Hill Jephson Robb's Wonder! The turn out was amazing and we all hope you had a wonderful time.

Portobello Beach is now the site of three magnificent pyramids, lets work together and make sure they last all the way through to December!

We'd love to hear what you think of wonder, read on details on how to submit feedback; view some photos; and find out how to submit your own photos for display on this site.
