Michael Pinsky has just been awarded the 2010 light-based commission for Big Things on the Beach at Portobello. Michael Pinsky uses the mediums of video, performance, mapping and programming to respond site-specifically to physical and sociological space. The context of a place is crucial, providing both the content and sites for his work. Michael will be in Portobello in mid August to meet the people and research the place of Portobello and develop ideas for his planned artwork, launching March 2010.

Artist duo Grennan & Sperandio have recently been awarded the first of the Imagine Porty Prom art commissions! Well-known for their artworks in comic book form and more recently through television and community action projects (their work can be seen at www.kartoonkings.com), for the past nineteen years Grennan & Sperandio have transformed and presented the narratives of friends’, relatives’ and strangers’ lives into oddly familiar objects and events. Since 1995, they have developed comic book, animation and community projects in conjunction with museums and broadcast, web and publishing companies in New York, Boston, London and Gateshead. The pair are perhaps best known for working with Chicago chocolate factory workers to design and produce their own chocolate bar as part of the influential 'Culture in Action' exhibition organised by Mary Jane Jacob in Chicago in 1993. Simon Grennan has been engaging local people to help them to create a temporary sculpture that captures the spirit of Portobello: “We’re out and about in Portobello in October and November getting to know what it’s really like. We’re asking people we meet to answer a simple question – If Portobello was a character, what character would it be? Along with our own visits, historical research and conversations with Portobello people, the answers to this question will add up to a feeling of the character and soul of Portobello. We’ll channel all this information when we get around to making our Giant Psychic Avatar of Portobello, which will appear as a big inflatable in a number of Portobello locations next year." The commission will be launched in March 2010... |

The Scottish Arts Council and Edinburgh City Council have agreed to fund Big Things on the Beach to involve the public in creating a Public Art Plan for Portobello Promenade. We call the project Imagine Porty Prom. Further information about the project can be read here. To get the project under way we are looking for two key people; a full time Participation Worker to create opportunities for public involvement and a Public Art Consultant to ensure that we are outward looking, meet the highest standards and produce a professional and 'do-able' Plan. Follow the links to find out more about these positions and pass on the information to any of your contacts who might be able to offer the skills and experience we need. Further information and application pack for Participation Worker (application deadline passed) Further information and application pack for Public Art Consultant (application deadline passed)
In July we will launch an ambitious programme of activity, including a number of temporary arts commissions, to enable local people and visitors to Portobello to share their imaginings about the Promenade of the future, what we would like to experience when we are there and how we would like to feel about it. The Public Art Plan we create will be incorporated into the development of the City Council's Waterfront Promenade project to develop the full 17 miles of Edinburgh's shoreline (read more about this in The Scotsman). From July, Big Things on the Beach will have its own home when we take over the premises last occupied by the Tides Inn pub at the bottom of Kings Road. This will be the base for the Garden Gallery and the Imagine Porty Prom projects and a launch pad for the future development of Big Things. We look forward to inviting you to our 'lift off' party later in the year. |
