ToxMe, by Federico Calo

E-mail Print

ToxMeBig Things on the Beach invites all concerned citizens of Portobello to join us on September 3rd in an artistic expression of concern for the quality of life.

We are proud to present the UK and Scottish premiere of ToxMe by Federico Calo’ in cooperation with Freakfoundation. The Italian artist Federico Calo’ is one of the most controversial and public video artists in Europe.

Ex founder and promoter of Critical Mass Italy, this video artist is also creator with Nadia Vitale, videomaker and videoclipper of the project: Freakfoundation, an independent and international association of free thinkers which include artists, writers, musicians, journalists, cultural informers and lovers of visual and independents form of arts.

As part of this year’s Public Art Fest, the Federico Calo’ would like to involve local organisations and community groups in Edinburgh and Portobello area to realise a spectacular and impactful human living exhibition on Portobello Promenade, related with his project: ToxMe.

The idea is born from a very simple reality: every year, everybody eats almost 6 kilos of additives contained in food, but toxification also includes noise, urban anger, environmental pollution, intellectual conditioning and the distortion of our personal right to exercise and express freely what we really think. The aim of Toxme is to bring this reality into public awareness through the medium of public art. Federico Calo’ works around Europe and involves directly local people as volunteers to realise his videos. Through his connection with Big Things on the Beach, Federico Calo’ has understood that Portobello is an active engaged community – not just a dormitory suburb of Edinburgh. This is what has inspired him to create his next video piece here.

Big Things on The Beach and Federico Calo’, with the art direction of Guglielmo Greco Piccolo are recruiting local volunteers who want to take part in this groundbreaking public event. All aspects of humanity will be represented, from infants to seniors, people with all kinds of occupations, lifestyles and abilities. Everyone is invited to take part. 300 people, would be great. 400 would be fantastic, but 500 would be really shocking and exciting and would attract a significant mass of visitors, foreign and local and become absolutely AMAZING!!!

Big Things on the Beach is a public art trust in Portobello, a seaside suburb close to the city centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. It was formed by a group of residents in 2003 to explore the potential of the seafront as a site for engagement with public artworks by both emerging and established artists.

Since 2004 we have commissioned artists to create substantial temporary artworks, trained ourselves and others in the process of commissioning public artworks through international site visits and guest lectures and successfully raised funding to these ends.

Our current project - The Big Welcome - is supported by Creative Scotland, Portobello & Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnership and Edinburgh City Libraries
