Three Temporary Public Art Commissions

E-mail Print

UPDATE: Film comission buget raised to £500

Big Things on the Beach wish to commission three temporary public artworks for specific spaces along Portobello's waterfront and promenade area.

We want these temporary public artworks to excite, engage and have visual impact. We are interested in encouraging the public to look at the promenade area in a new way. These commissions are in conjunction with the Garden Gallery project which is running in August 2008. Artists who are exhibiting in the Garden Gallery may also put forward submissions.

The group will consider other suggestions but our preferred sites for the artworks are;

  • Harbour Road (seating area near the Figgate burn & Promenade)
  • The concrete bandstand area on the Promenade and/or the green spaces behind it (at the bottom of Marlborough Street)
  • The area outside toilets at Joppa end of the Promenade
  • The waterfront area
The budget for the artworks is £900 each. The works must be ready to be installed by Thursday 24 July 2008 and their duration will depend on the nature of the work itself. Please note that selected artists must have Public Liability Insurance (which can be obtained through membership to Scottish Artists Union, with AI (Artists Newsletter) and other)

Film Maker

A film maker is required to document these three artworks in situ, film the opening event and gather the public's response to the artworks. The budget for the short film is £300. The film needs to be in a suitable format to go online.

Submission

Submission Deadline 24 June 2008.

Short listed artists and film makers will be invited to present their ideas to the Public Art Group on the evening of Wednesday 2 July 2008. If interested please send your proposal with examples of previous work and two referees to;

Big Things on the Beach is a public art trust in Portobello, a seaside suburb close to the city centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. It was formed by a group of residents in 2003 to explore the potential of the seafront as a site for engagement with public artworks by both emerging and established artists.

Since 2004 we have commissioned artists to create substantial temporary artworks, trained ourselves and others in the process of commissioning public artworks through international site visits and guest lectures and successfully raised funding to these ends.

Our current project - The Big Welcome - is supported by Creative Scotland, Portobello & Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnership and Edinburgh City Libraries
