Big Things on the Beach has made a proposal to the Scottish Arts Council for a share of its £8M Inspire Fund which is intended to encourage more people to become involved in the arts.
Our proposal, "Resort", is for a year long programme of activity in 2009-10 to enable artists and local people to explore what the idea of resort means in the 21st century and the role of art in making it a reality.
Resort will provide opportunities for people to become involved in a major, artist lead, challenge project; for artists to change the ways in which we perceive Portobello and for the creation of a major artwork by the artist Richard Wilson whose work "Turning the Place Over" is a highlight of Liverpool’s European City of Culture 2008 celebrations (see the report from this years commissioning group). Local people will play a central role in commissioning artists for the project and young people will be fully involved in making the year a vibrant and exciting experience.
We will know in July if Big Things on the Beach will get an opportunity to enter a full scale bid for the Inspire Fund's millions.

Big Things on the Beach is a public art trust in Portobello, a seaside suburb close to the city centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. It was formed by a group of residents in 2003 to explore the potential of the seafront as a site for engagement with public artworks by both emerging and established artists.
